A constant maximum aperture of f/4 ensures consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and the Optical Image Stabilization system helps to minimise the appearance of camera shake by 3.5 stops when working in low-light conditions with longer shutter speeds. Optically four aspherical and four extra-low dispersion elements help to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for greater overall image clarity and sharpness. An Super EBC coating minimises flare and ghosting for higher contrast and improved colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Thanks to an internal focusing system and stepping AF motor, focusing is smooth and quiet, making this lens a great choice for both still and video work. Additionally an updated physical design incorporates a locking 'A' position on the aperture ring and a labelled f/stop scale. Overall weight of the lens, compared to its previous version, has been reduced due to the size reduction of both the aperture and focus rings. The now weather-resistant zoom is dust and moisture sealed for working in harsh environment.
